Two young quarterbacks were on the field Friday night in Jacksonville. One, Miami’s Ryan Tannehill, was pretty good. The other, Jacksonville’s Blaine Gabbert, was pretty bad.
Tannehill went 5-of-9 for 75 yards, with no interceptions, and he finished in style, hitting tight end Dustin Keller on a 22-yard touchdown pass that turned out to be Tannehill’s last play before he called it a night.
Gabbert went just 5-of 10 for 19 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception. Those numbers may actually look a little worse than Gabbert really was — he had a couple drops and didn’t get much help from his offensive line — but averaging less than two yards a pass is alarming. Gabbert has never shown a consistent ability to get anything going downfield, and nothing he did tonight suggests that he’s improved in that respect.
